"What Is Truth?" - Jn. 18:37-38

"'...You say that I am a king and you are right,' Jesus said. 'I was born for that purpose. And I come to bring truth to the world. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.'"

"'What is truth,' Pilate asked." Jn. 18:37-38

In all the gospels, this is the only place where this particular dialogue between Jesus and Pilate is documented. It seems so clear to me here that Jesus is basically saying, "If you have been called you will recognize me, if not, everything I say will sound like the ramblings of a lunatic." In Matthew, even Pilate's wife says, "Leave that innocent man alone, because I had a terrible nightmare about him." She is seeing/feeling something about Jesus that she doesn't understand (even calls him innocent), but Pilate completely dismisses it--his blindness is complete (though he does try to absolve himself of guilt be washing his hands--interesting... what would he be feeling guilty of?). Jesus seems to be restating the shepherd metaphor he used in Jn. 10, "After he gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they recognize his voice." Going back to using "The Matrix" as a contemporary metaphor, the world we live in is a lie, the gospel is the only truth (the truth will set you free). For all of time, mankind has sought for the "truth," yet when it is staring them in the face most refuse to recognize it.

Father, thank you for sending your son to be the Savior of this world. Thank you for your faithfulness to not leave us alone or to abandon us. Thank you for making a way.
